So… What’s the problem with blue light? Light is scattered by gas molecules in the air; the shorter the wavelength of light, the more it is scattered. Because of its shorter wavelength, blue light is scattered ten times more than red light. Additionally, rods in the eye have different levels of sensitivity, and blue light focuses too far in front of the retina for them to reach. Have you ever noticed that it is hard to focus on sources of blue light? The edges get fuzzy and cause a halo effect, especially at night, even when other colors next to it look sharp? That bright blue LED light, which is also given off by many electronic devices, may be the cause of eye strain, headaches, and even sleep disruption.

How does the eye focus? Light reflected off objects is focused on the retina at the back of the eye. Things appear out of focus under water because the cornea is designed to perceive light passing through air, not water—this explains clear vision while wearing swimming goggles that create a pocket of air.

Can a person focus their eyes manually? The Schachar mechanism theory states that when the ciliary muscle contracts, the central lens surface becomes more steeply rounded and increase optical power. This is called squinting. When the muscle is relaxed, the surface will flatten and decrease optical power.

Squinting actually improves eyesight by changing the shape of the eye, directing the image to the fovea and limiting the amount of light that enters. The amount of light entering the eye can pose a problem if it arrives from different angles, so it must be focused together.

Occasional squinting won’t permanently damage sight, but it can lead to headaches because it involves the contraction of the facial muscles. Too much squinting might be a sign of degrading eyesight.
